Description

Evergreen shrub or tree to 10 m tall with sharp spines in the leaf axils and on trunk. Leaves alternate, simple, leathery, to 8 cm long, shape variable, margins toothed to wavy, glabrous or pubescent. Plants dioecious, flowers small and yellowish in small clusters in the leaf axils. Fruit a round edible berry to 2 cm, red to purple when ripe.
