Species Status Assessment
FNAI maintains information describing the biology and conservation status of each species we track in our Biotics Natural Heritage database and uses the NatureServe Conservation Status Assessment system to regularly update their conservation status ranks. We build on this Heritage foundation to assist other agencies with their specific conservation prioritization needs.
Examples:
- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission uses species ranks developed by FNAI as part of their process for selecting and prioritizing work on Florida's Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Each year, FNAI updates species ranks for invertebrate SGCN to reflect the best available data.
- FNAI data and expert interpretation informs the Species Status Assessment (SSA) process used by the US Fish and Wildlife Service
