Abstract:
ARROW Birding_hotspots is a polygon shapefile showing areas that were identified in the Florida Fish And Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website (http://myfwc.com/viewing/regions/nwreg.html) as a “hotspot” for viewing birds on September 1, 2004. The boundaries for the areas were extracted from FNAI’s managed areas database.
Purpose:
This shapefile is a digital representation of areas identified as a birding hotspot by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on its web site. This shapefile data set was developed as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s ecological characterization grant to the Florida Natural Areas Inventory in 2003 for the Apalachicola River.

The list of birding hotspots was complete as of September 1, 2004 relative to the Florida FWC website. However, it is obvious that there are many other places for viewing birds besides those identified by the FWC. Consequently, the data set represents an implementation of birding hot spots as identified by one state agency rather than a comprehensive effort to include all quality areas for birdwatching.
