There's more to the land than meets the eye. Our eyes can't see the vast stretches of time that has made the ARROW region what it is now. What we see are the results of hundreds of millions of years of shifting continents, ice ages and heat spells, faraway glaciers freezing and melting, and rivers squirming around in their beds. Nor can we see the seams of rock that keep us above water (for now), seams that look like a crazy layer cake on geological maps.

Even the very top layer--the soil--can tell a story about the past. Reading the soil takes patience and attention to detail, and if it's done well, it can direct our land uses to the most suitable spots.
