Santa Rosa Island 2008

The uncontrolled oil flow resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico threatens the Florida coast and has renewed interest in an assessment of Florida’s remaining coastal uplands prepared by the Florida Natural Areas Inventory in 2005. The work was conducted by FNAI under contract to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection with funding provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The document maps and describes all natural coastal uplands greater than 20 acres in extent (public and private), and natural coastal wetlands greater than 200 acres in extent (private ownership only). Each upland site is mapped, natural communities listed and ranked, rare species occurrences listed, and each site scored ecologically. Additionally, a comparative analysis evaluating change in natural condition since 1992 is provided.
