Yehl Skipper (Poanes yehl) Family: Hesperiidae Range: Florida Panhandle south to Gainesville Habitat: moist hammocks, canebrakes The bright orange coloration of newly emerged males is especially eye-catching. Males perch on sunny leaves two to three feet above the ground while awaiting females. Populations of this species have declined as a result of loss of wetland habitats and canebrakes. Information on seasonal occurrence and host plant in Florida is extracted from Glassberg et al. (2000) Butterflies through Binoculars: Florida, Oxford University Press, and Cech et al. (2005) Butterflies of the East Coast: An Observer's Guide, Princeton University Press. |
