Butterfly Name

Meske's Skipper (Hesperia meskei)

Family: Hesperiidae
FNAI State Rank: S2S3

Range: all of Florida, although it may no longer occur on the extreme southern peninsula
Seasonal Occurrence: all year in Florida Keys, May through November elsewhere in Florida

Habitat: open woodlands that are prone to fire

This species is rarely found in large numbers in Florida. The lightning bolt pattern on the upper wing surface is a good field mark.

Information on seasonal occurrence and host plant in Florida is extracted from Glassberg et al. (2000) Butterflies through Binoculars: Florida, Oxford University Press, and Cech et al. (2005) Butterflies of the East Coast: An Observer's Guide, Princeton University Press.
